Bead-Blasted Stainless Steel Sheet: Matte Finish Guide

A lot of customers first see bead-blasted stainless on an elevator wall and ask what finish it is. It doesn't look brushed — there are no lines. It doesn't look mirror — there's no reflection. It just looks matte, uniform, and expensive. That's the bead-blasted effect. This guide covers how it's made, what it costs, and when to specify it over brushed or mirror.

How It's Actually Made

Bead blasting isn't a brushing process. It's not a coating. It's physical: fine glass beads or zirconium sand are blasted at high pressure onto the stainless surface, creating millions of tiny dents that break up reflection.

You can start from a 2B sheet, a mirror sheet, or even a PVD-colored sheet — the beads go on top, and the surface turns matte. The bead size determines how fine the texture is. Fine beads give a smooth, almost powdery matte. Coarse beads give a more visible sandblast texture.

The result is a non-directional finish. Unlike brushed stainless, which has lines running one way, bead-blasted is uniform in every direction. That's why it reads as "matte" rather than "brushed" — there's no grain to follow.

Bead-Blasted vs. Brushed vs. Mirror

People usually arrive at bead-blasted because they've ruled out the other two.

Mirror is dramatic but shows every fingerprint, water spot and scuff. On an elevator wall it looks great on day one and terrible by month three.

Brushed (No.4 or hairline) hides fingerprints better and has a clean look, but it has a direction. If panels don't line up perfectly, you can see the grain mismatch. Brushed also reflects enough light to glare in bright rooms.

Bead-blasted is the middle ground. It's matte, so it doesn't glare. It's non-directional, so panel alignment is less visible. It hides fingerprints almost as well as embossed because the surface breaks up reflections evenly. The trade-off is that it looks "flat" compared to brushed — some designers find it too plain.

For most commercial interiors, the choice comes down to this: brushed if you want visible texture, mirror if you want reflection, bead-blasted if you want neither — just a clean, matte, uniform surface that stays looking new.

When to Specify Bead-Blasted

Bead-blasted earns its place in three situations.

First, when glare is the problem. In elevator lobbies, office corridors and retail spaces, brushed stainless can reflect ceiling lights into people's eyes. Bead-blasted absorbs the light instead of bouncing it. If your architect is complaining about reflections on a brushed wall, switch to bead-blasted.

Second, when panel consistency matters. On a large wall with many sheets, brushed panels can have slightly different grain directions or line densities that show up under angled light. Bead-blasted is uniform — every panel looks the same, no matter how the fabricator cut it. This is why it's popular for full-wall cladding and elevator cabs where panel seams need to disappear.

Third, when you want a colored matte surface. PVD color over bead-blasted is the most common way to get a colored stainless panel that doesn't reflect. Champagne gold, black, bronze and rose gold over bead-blasted all read as soft, luxury matte colors. The same colors over mirror look too shiny; over brushed they show the grain direction.

Colors and Grades

Bead-blasted comes in natural silver, or PVD colored. The natural silver version is a light grey matte — think of the surface of an aluminum can but finer. Most customers order it colored because that's where the matte effect really shines.

The popular colors are black titanium (deep black matte), champagne gold (warm pale gold matte), bronze (warm brown matte) and rose gold. These are the same PVD colors we put on brushed and mirror sheet, but over bead-blasted they read softer and more premium.

Grades are the same as any decorative stainless: 304 for interior use, 316L for humid or coastal areas, 201 for budget dry interior. The bead-blasting process doesn't change the substrate — it only changes the surface.

Practical Details

Bead size matters. Fine beads give a smooth, almost powdery matte that reads as "premium" up close. Coarse beads give a more visible sandblast texture that reads as "industrial." For interior walls and elevators we default to fine beads. For exterior cladding or textured feature walls, coarse beads can work. Ask for samples in both grits — the difference is obvious in person.

Thickness. Same range as decorative brushed: 0.5 to 1.0 mm for wall panels, 0.5 to 0.8 mm for elevator interiors. Bead-blasting doesn't add or remove enough material to change the thickness spec.

Weight. Same calculation: length × width × thickness × 7.93. A 1219 × 2438 mm sheet at 0.8 mm is about 18.8 kg.

Installation. Bead-blasted panels install the same way as brushed — clips, adhesive or framing. The advantage is that seams are less visible because the surface is uniform. You don't have to worry about grain direction when laying out panels.

Cleaning. Wipe with a soft cloth and mild detergent. The matte surface hides water spots better than mirror, but it can show fingerprints slightly more than brushed — though far less than mirror. An optional anti-fingerprint coating is available for high-contact areas.

What can go wrong. Bead-blasting unevenly is the main quality issue. Cheap bead-blasted sheets have patches where the beads hit harder or softer, showing up as brighter and duller areas on a wall. Always inspect samples under angled light before ordering.

What Customers Ask

Q: What's the difference between bead-blasted and sandblasted?

They're the same process with different media. "Bead blasted" usually means fine glass beads for a smooth matte surface. "Sandblasted" often means coarser sand for a rougher texture. We use fine glass beads for decorative sheet.

Q: Is bead-blasted stainless the same as matte stainless?

Matte is a general term. Bead-blasted is one way to achieve a matte finish. Other ways include 2B mill finish and etching. Bead-blasted is the most uniform and decorative matte finish for interior use.

Q: Can bead-blasted stainless be colored?

Yes — and it's one of the most common uses. PVD coating over bead-blasted gives a matte colored surface in black, gold, bronze, rose gold and other tones. The color is soft and non-reflective.

Q: Does bead-blasted stainless show fingerprints?

Less than mirror, slightly more than brushed. The uniform matte surface breaks up reflections, so fingerprints don't show as dark streaks. An optional anti-fingerprint coating reduces it further.

Q: What thickness do I need for wall cladding?

0.6 to 0.8 mm is standard for interior wall panels. Go to 1.0 mm for taller walls or wider spans between fixings. The bead-blasted finish doesn't affect structural requirements.

Q: Can I use bead-blasted stainless outdoors?

Yes, in 304 for covered outdoor areas and 316L for exposed coastal environments. The matte finish doesn't reflect sunlight, which is an advantage for exterior cladding.
